Another wonderful Sundaylicious this past week for Laura and I. It has been a couple of weeks since our last post because poor Laura got really sick and we had to cancel our reservations. I hadn't seen her in over 2 weeks, and I missed my friend very much. I am use to seeing her weekly when we do Sundaylicious, and when we don't get together on a regular basis I get sad:-( I was very much looking forward to this brunch. We were supposed to go to The Beehive two Sundays ago but Laura got ill, and when I called to cancel the woman was so nice and super understanding. She even asked me to tell Laura that she hopes she feels better....how nice!! I knew that once Laura was better we would have to go there right away...it already got eggs for sincerity and kindness, and we hadn't even been there yet :-)
As we drove into the South End to get to The Beehive, http://www.beehiveboston.com/, we were nervous about parking. It can be a nightmare over there, and you all remember the last time we went to the South End.... Laura and I got a parking ticket...we didn't want that again :-( We left extra time in our travels to find parking, and it paid off!! We found a spot only a couple of blocks away...sweet :-) I knew this was going to be an awesome brunch!! Do you ever just know how a day is going to go by the signs you get?...like finding a parking spot easily, or a great song is on the radio...you know what I mean? I just knew when we scored that spot that this brunch was gonna knock our socks off....and I was right!!
As we entered The Beehive, we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and the decor. The Beehive has a Parisian, Moroccan, Moulin Rouge, meets a Prohibition Speakeasy, feel to it. It has exposed brick walls covered with cool art and music posters. It also has very elegant tapestry drapes that give it a warm and cozy feel, and chandeliers hanging from the walls that make the inside sparkle. It was awesome!! It has two floors, and appears way smaller then it is from the outside....but when you get inside you see how big it really is. Once you go down the steps into the other part of the restaurant...it opens up like a blooming flower and reveals another world of amazingness down there too. We were seated upstairs, and we overlooked the live Jazz band below us on the bottom floor. It was the perfect location, because we weren't too close to the music which might have been too loud otherwise. We could also see the band on a cool projector that was on the brick wall above us....so unique!! The band was really good, and added the soundtrack to this retro jazz age speakeasy of a brunch. This place was really pulling at our heart strings, and we hadn't even ordered yet.
We started the brunch off with some cocktails and pierogies. I know you are probably saying..."pierogies? that's not your usual granola yogurt parfait starter, girls"....yes we know! That is another notch on The Beehives' belt...a very unique menu, that has you really thinking about what you want to order. It is not the basics that we tend to go for, and it has quite an array of choices. So yes, we started with pierogies and drinks. I got a Mimosa, and Laura got a Bloody Mary. Both cocktails were very refreshing and well made, and the pierogies were DIVINE!!! They were truffled potato and cheese pierogies, with caramelized onions....and they were melt in your mouth and get your taste buds dancing good. Also, the fresh chive sour cream that came with it was scrumptious!! First course...DE-LI-CIOUS!!
For our entrees, I got an omelet that came with shaved steak, peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and tomatoes. It was like a Philly cheesesteak meets an omelet....sooooooo good (and that's coming straight from the Philly girl)!!!! It came with a side of potatoes that were like potato chips that were fried...very interesting, and very yummy!! It makes them super crispy and I ate every single one:-) The omelet was a little on the greasy side, which was tasty, but after a while that did not make me feel so great. Not sure if it was the potatoes that did that to the omelet, or vice versa, but I wish it was lighter on the grease. Laura got a Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict...which she loved!! It had the perfect balance of creaminess and savoriness. The eggs oozed out just the way she liked, and it also came with the potatoes. Next time we go we will have to try the Poutine topped with sunny side eggs...sounds awesome!!!
As we were about to leave, we went downstairs to use the ladies room....which was one of the coolest bathrooms I have ever seen!! It had brick walls mixed with bright pops of hot pink and aqua walls, which were painted with a cool design. After we saw how awesome the downstairs area was, we just had to stop and have another cocktail at the downstairs bar :-) We picked the most amazing drink which consisted of Champagne, Vodka, St. Germaine, and grapefruit juice...it was delicious!!! It was refreshing, and we had such a great time just relaxing at the bar and catching up. I thought I loved the upstairs part the best, but when I got downstairs I loved this area even better!!! You can't go wrong no matter where you are seated at The Beehive...the whole place rules!!!
As if you couldn't tell, we LOVED The Beehive!!! It is one of our favorites, and we are definitely going back there to have dinner sometime soon. We give it a 10 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere, and a 9 out of 10 eggs for food. It would have been a perfect score, but I just thought my omelet was slightly greasy. The dish of the day was easily our pierogies, which we scarfed down in seconds...they were that good!!! The live jazz makes for an awesome soundtrack to your bunch, and the place itself is one of the most unique places we have ever been to. It makes you feel welcome, and keeps your attention with all the quirkiness going on around you. The Beehive is one of the coolest brunch spots on our list by far!! After brunch we walked around the South End, and then headed to the Lowes Boston Common movie theater to see "Gatsby". We were driving around and around for another spot near the common, and this was another horrendous parking situation in the making....however luck was still on our side and we got one after the 4th drive around as we were threatening the universe that we were gonna go home if we didn't find one......but we did. It all worked out for the best, and we made our movie time. The movie was really good, and it just added to the sparkle of the day. Everything fell into place, and like Ice Cube says, "Today was a good day". Yeah it was :-)
