Double the Deliciousness

This week Laura and I had to split up for Sundaylicious, as she had a surprise visit from her cousin (and alas the only time they could hang out was smack in the middle of Brunch on Sunday).  So I was lucky enough to have my downstairs neighbor Deb to go with me, while Laura went with her cousin and her boyfriend Alex (to not confuse our readers since he has the same name as me....I will be referred to as Alex B. in this post when Laura writes her entry below).  So this is a first time double write up for Sundaylicious..how exciting...double the deliciousness!!!
Deb and I chose to go to a newer restaurant in Davis Square called M3, because Deb had heard some good buzz about it and wanted to check it out.  M3 is a concept restaurant in Southern Dining (their name stands for "Meat n' Three"), and it is located right outside Davis Sq. on Highland Ave.: http://imwithmeat.com/home.html.   On this particular Sunday, Davis Sq. was hosting an Irish road race for St. Patty's Day, and all the roads were blocked off leading in to the Square, which made it super interesting (aka very difficult) to find parking close by.  This actually helped our wait time once we got there, however, because people couldn't drive into Davis the way they normally do on the weekend and I think this made M3 less crowded (a small reward for having to put up with loud Irish music and silly people all clad in green walking around the square).
M3 is very small and I would not want to be there when they have a huge crowd, because there is no place to wait.  We did not have a big wait time, thank goodness, and were seated within 10 minutes of arriving.  The seats in M3 are very close together, but this place has  a cool eclectic vibe to it.  It has an amazing blue tin roof, cool modern chandeliers, and they have written all the specials on the walls in chalk (along with some funny things too!).

The menu for M3 is small (just like the space), and it is very meat centric (hello! their name stands for "Meat N' Three" for goodness sakes!!....so vegetarians beware, there is not much you can order here).   I am not personally someone who likes to start off her day with fried chicken (even though it seemed to be a popular choice).   I got the Cinnamon Bran French Toast, after really racking my brain over some of the choices that were available.  I asked the waitress what her favorite dish was, and this is what she recommended....and she did not steer me wrong!!! This dish was delicious!!  It was very moist and full of cinnamon flavor.  It had an apple butter syrup topping which was so tasty I could have eaten it by itself, and also came with fresh strawberries and blueberries on top.  It had the perfect mixture of that bran cereal coating that just added a pop of uniqueness that made this one of the best french toast dishes I have had.  I also ordered a side of peppered bacon, which was the bomb!! I got a Mimosa which was made with fresh OJ, Presecco, and pomegranate juice (which made it very delightful and refreshing).  It was a little pulpy due to the fresh OJ, but the pom juice cut the bitterness that fresh OJ can sometimes add to a mimosa.  The coffee, however, was not that good and it wasn't that hot when they poured it....you can't win 'em all I guess :-(
Deb didn't get any coffee or a foo foo drink, but she did get to enjoy her water from the cutest water glasses I have ever seen!!!  The were like mason jars with cute moose pictures on them :-)  For her entree Deb picked the Belgian Waffle with Apple Honey Butter and fresh fruit on top (and a mound of yummy whip cream!!!), and she really liked it.  It was very light and buttery, and Deb cleaned her plate!!!  She got a side of Maple sausage which she did not like however.  It was dry and crumbly, and when she asked the waitress if this was the norm...she said yes..yuck!

Overall we give M3 an 8 out of 10 eggs for food, and a 6 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere.  The two entrees were awesome, but the coffe was bitter and cold and Deb's sausge was dry.  The place itself was a lttile too small for my taste, and I would hate to see what it is like when it is super packed out.  The cool chalk writing on the walls was fun to look at, and we loved the ceiling...but it was not a really cozy place to eat.   The Dish of the Day was my Cinnamon Bran French Toast because it was popping with flavor!!  If you like fried chicken and waffles, and really tasty Southern food..M3 is worth a go!

Now here is Laura's entry for her brunch.  She took her cousin to Gaslight since it is such an amazing spot. So even though we have already been there...it is soooooo good it needs another Sundaylicious shout out:

Ok, so Sundaylicious almost didn't happen for me this week. I got a last minute call from my lovely cousin Dana who was in town visiting her boyfriend (and recent Harvard bad-ass) Alex. Seeing her is always such a treat, usually reserved for Xmas eve and random parent's birthdays, so I was thrilled. The two met and lived in DC, where Dana still is, so her visits are that much more special. Anyhow. As scheduling would have it, Sunday afternoon was the only time that worked for us. So brunch it was....

That bastard Daylight Savings Time threw us all for a loop, certainly after my late Saturday night close at work, so we started a bit later than planned. The original idea was a spot in the South End that Alex had chosen, but unfortunately as I picked them up, we figured out they were booked solid. As we have been learning these past few months, any good South End spot will probably require reservations. Take note, eggheads. As we got situated in the car, we discussed keeping it chill and this side of the river, even though Alex had made new reservations at some french place, which we would just cancel. All was fine and settled on Temple Bar, my Cambridge go-to, until he mentioned that those new reservations were at " some spot called Gaslight." With those heavenly words, my car literally turned right and headed for the Mass Ave bridge. Oh Gaslight, you transfix me quite :-)

If you all recall, Gaslight was one of our first perfect scores. Adorable, french bistro loveliness with delicious food to boot makes it one of Alex B.and my faves. Special shout out to Mike Flowers, Sundaylicious fan and one of my favorite regulars at work, who graciously gave us a gift certificate a few weeks back that Alex B. and I happily enjoyed. Thank you again, Mikey. You are completely awesome. Anyways, back to the brunch. We were a little late for the reservation, and as we got there around 1pm the place was absolutely packed, more so than I have ever seen it. There was a wait at the door, but the hostess was kind and assured us it would only be a few minutes for our table. I'd say we waited around 20 minutes, but being as we were around 20 minutes late, it was totally fair/fine. We were sat in one of the coveted booths by the window, which are weirdly private yet spacious, and drench you in sunlight as you watch the street above. Perfect. This was a crew of  non-drinkers today, so we started with some piping hot coffee and a mixed basket of croissants and muffins. Now, I am not a sweets person by any means, but I would get BUSY on this chocolate croissant every day of my life if I could. It's ridiculous. Also in the mix was a blueberry muffin that tasted like cake (Alex B's fave!) and a few raspberry tarts and plain croissants. Totally delicious.

For the main dishes, I didn't have to look at the menu. The Croque Madame here makes my knees shake. I love it and dream about it often. Tasso ham, gruyere cheese, bechamel sauce on grilled brioche bread topped with a fried egg. Decadent and savory, salty and creamy, it's heaven. I swapped the side of pomme frites for mixed greens to try and pretend I have a little self control. Alex chose the same, after learning they were out of tuna for the day. And Dana chose the Omelet with vegetables and feta cheese. She stuck with the side of pomme frites, not knowing you could substitute. Hey, a little crispy salt never hurt anyone.. I love the food here, and give my sandwich 10 eggs. I am obsessed. Our visiting DC brunchers, however, were a little harsher. Alex said that while good, he wished his madame was a bit cheesier and gooier, and wasn't as creamy as he would have hoped. 8 eggs from Alex. Dana enjoyed her omelet but made the funny (and true?) comment that it's difficult to have either a remarkable or terrible omelet. They are mostly just good, as this one was. 7 eggs from Dana.(DC don't f*ck AROUND!)  We forgot to pick a dish of the day, so I am giving it to myself and my croque madame. True love. And for atmosphere, we settled on a 9, as the place is honestly just adorable. Overall, and despite the rating discrepancies, we certainly enjoyed it. And it was wonderful to catch up, if only for a quick afternoon.

Now if I had half a brain, I would have arranged for the entire Sundaylicious crew to eat together, as this is our first two-part Sundaylicious. This occurred to me too late, however, so for now I am just going to blame daylight savings time.  Tune in next week for a special St. Patty's Day edition...it may be a proper entry or it may just be pictures of Jameson shots and us in stupid green hats, lying face down on the floor. Either way, I'm sure it will be fun :-) Have a great week, eggheads. Spring is almost here xoxo

Now I am sure next week's St. Patty's Day brunch will be fun, but....I will not be doing any Jameson shots Laura...MIMOSAS all the way!!!!
