www.upstairsonthesquare.com, because it is close to us and we didn't want to travel too far in the storm....and it has been on my Sundaylicious radar for awhile. So off on the T we went with our snow boots on and our hoods up over our heads as the snow tried to blow us away...but nothing can stop us from a good Sundaylicious brunch.
As we arrived in Harvard Sq, the snow made everything look magical. The good thing about having snow again one week after another big storm....it turned all the ugly brown snow white again...hey we gotta stay positive right? We entered Upstairs on the Square around 1pm, and the minute we got seated we were serenaded by a Harvards' all boy acapella choir called the Krokodiloes. They are Harvards' oldest acapella singing group, and it was so nice and special to hear them sing during brunch (and it was very unexpected). It made the experience super unique, and while they only sang three songs, it was just the perfect amount. What a way to start the day!
Upstairs on the Square is a very cool and unique space to have brunch. It is an extremely bright and fun restaurant that is not afraid to set the tone for a good time out. With hot pink, purple, green, and gold walls, and zebra fabric couches and chairs...this place screams SASS!!! It's like "Alice in Wonderland" meets "Marie Antionette". This would be a perfect spot for a bridal shower, or a fun birthday brunch. It picks your spirits up immediately....and with the outside all white and covered in snow, it made the brilliant colors stand out inside even more.
For starters, Upstairs on the Square gave us a basket of cute little muffins, breads, and scones...this was such a nice touch and a great way to start our brunch while we were deciding what to order. I LOVE places that take those extra measures to welcome their guests...and a free basket of delicious breads is a great way to win over my heart. We also started off with a Mimosa for me, and a Bloody Mary for Laura. The drinks were ok, but not the best we've had. My Mimosa was made with fresh squeezed orange juice, and you would think this would make it better...but it doesn't. It actually makes it thick due to all the pulp, and it is not as refreshing as it is with juice from concentrate...shocking I know!! Laura's Bloody was good, but it was a little on the smaller side...even the celery was way bigger then the glass!!
For our meals we were definitely both feeling the savory side of this menu. I went with the fine herb and goat cheese omelet (although I will have to go back for the french toast with the warm fruit compote and maple syrup!!!). The omelet was DE-LI-CIOUS!!! It is amazing how the perfect amount of seasoning can make a simple dish an amazing dish. The goat cheese played off nicely with the tomatoes inside, and the omelet was cooked perfectly. It also came with a side salad and potatoes, and those potatoes were super yummy. They were very crispy, and again seasoned perfectly...they got the flavor going on at Upstairs on the Square!! Laura chose the Eggs Benedict, which she really enjoyed. It came with pancetta, instead of tasso ham, and she said this made it really unique and yummy. Laura could write a blog solely about Eggs Benedict since she gets it almost every week!! We both have our favs that's for sure!!!
After our entrees we were stuffed, and we just sat and enjoyed our coffees until it was time to go. The storm outside had finally tapered off, so we braved the journey home. Overall, we give Upstairs on the Square a 9 out of 10 eggs for food, and a 9 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere. The food was seasoned very nicely, and they give you a yummy free bread basket to start off with (bonus points!!). The place itself is super fun, and the brightness and playfulness of the decor just makes you want to enjoy yourself....and we got a surprise serenade from the Harvard acapella choir!! The dish of the day was my fine herb and goat cheese omelet...but really everything was so good it was hard to choose the dish of the day. Upstairs on the Square has a magical whimsy that is inspiring, and I am so glad we made it out of the white snowy world outside and into this fantasy land inside. Let's cross our fingers that next Sunday is snow free!!
