Under the Weather
I just want to thank all of you for your kind words and well wishes over the past week. The passing of my Grandmother was a difficult time for my family, but having all the love and support of my family and friends helped me get through this week. I arrived back in Boston last night after a long train ride from Philadelphia and I was feeling sad and lonely (Tommy is away on the road touring), but the thought of my Sundaylicious day with Laura helped keep my spirits up.
Laura and I woke up this Sunday to a cloudy cold day, which actually suited the mood we were in. We decided to stay local, and check out Cafe Luna in Central Sq: http://cafeluna-centralsq.com. I had heard that they were famous for their latte's, and we were not in the mood for mimosas this morning so we thought Cafe Luna would be perfect for today's adventure...NO Mimosa's? I know weird right?!!! Our vibe today was more sweatshirts and staying warm and cozy, then our usual fun-spirited Sunday morning selves. To put it mildly...we were bumming it. Our respected rough past weeks left us a bit on the defeated and lazy end of the spectrum. Hey, we can't always be sunny and cheerful all the time right? Lord knows we try!! But you gotta stay true to your mood, and mother nature was with us today!
Cafe Luna was small and cozy, which could be a good or bad thing. Today, it was a bit in the middle. We arrived at 12:30pm and were given an hour and fifteen minute wait by the weirdest host I have ever experienced at a restaurant. There was no method to his madness, or so it seemed. He would give random time quotes to each couple coming in, and really have no rhyme or reason behind these times. The waitstaff seemed lackadaisical, and tables would sit with empty plates on them for a long time before even being cleared off...which was strange considering the absurd wait time. There was nowhere to wait so we squished ourselves in the entryway to hold tight until the host could figure out what the heck was going on.
The host told us we could leave and come back, which seemed nuts because he didn't even take our name or phone number at first, so I got the hunch it was better to stick around so he could feel my glare every time he came over. This guy was quite the character. He would ramble on with guests at the counter while ignoring more and more confused people coming in to put their name on the list. He would tell people the wait time, and then say it might not be worth the wait.....WTF? Then he would ask guests that were waiting the same questions over and over, and just seemed to not know what he was doing. He was comical and entertaining, and actually was very nice which was his saving grace. Hey, he kept us laughing during the wait for our table (even though it was at him, not with him). The host was just about to seat us at the counter to cut our wait time, but then suddenly seemed to change his mind because we actually got a table. It only took thirty minutes, which was not too bad. I think his total lack of organization actually worked in our favor today.
Cafe Luna has a vast array of brunch choices which are featured on three different menus, which also adds to the disorganization of the place. How many menus do you need? However, every option on each menu sounded delicious. We started out the meal with the infamous Latte's, which were quite yummy.
They came in cute mugs that reminded me of the cafe in the show "Friends". Laura's had a heart on top, and mine had a cool design. They tasted just as good as a mimosa...ok not that good, but it was what we felt like today. The table tops all had paper and crayons for guests to color on while they wait for their meals, which is a cute idea, and we took advantage...
For our brunch dishes, Laura and I went for good ol' breakfast sandwiches, a side of potatoes, and our usual bowl of granola, yogurt, and fruit. We were not feeling experimental today as you can tell. We went for the stick to your ribs, fill your belly with goodness, simplicity of some bacon, eggs, and cheese.
The potatoes were voted the dish of the day. They were seasoned perfectly, and had a creamy inside but crispy outside appeal. The yogurt bowl had a nice change up using greek yogurt, and crisp fresh fruit. It was a close runner up to the dish of the day for sure.
The food was just as good as we expected it to be after we saw all these awesome looking dishes being served around us. We will absolutely have to go back and check out the fancier options, as well as the outdoor seating, once the weather gets better. Laura already has her eye on the fig, prosciutto, and goat cheese omelet, and the berry stuffed french toast is calling my name!
Over all, Cafe Luna got an 8 out of 10 eggs for food, and a 6 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere. The bizarre staff and cramped quarters cost it some eggs, but the food and coffee were awesome!!! We then went back to my place to watch a movie and get cozy with a nice cup of tea. We watched "Young Adult", starring Charlize Theron, which was super weird. We thought it was going to be a comedy but it was far from it, and it's dark humor capped off our WTF day. All in all, not one of our most upbeat Sundaylicious days, but it sure was memorable! Even as we are writing this we are laughing at ourselves. Laughter is great medicine, and I am already starting to feel a little better :) Here's to getting back on track next Sunday!!!
