Metropolis is on Tremont St. in the South End, www.metropolisboston.com. Parking over there can be a bit of a pickle because it is all street parking, so Laura dropped us off so we could put our name in. Metropolis is very small, and the minute you get into the door you are face to face with the bar and not much room to stand and wait. We were told a 30-45 minute wait, and since we were a larger party this week we thought it best to hang tight. It is hard to be seated fast when your party is over two people, and we were also on the later side today due to daylight savings time. My streak of getting Laura out early has ended and we were back to the noon pick up. We arrived at Metropolis around 12:30pm today and we figured a small wait was better then a long one, so we held our ground and toughed it out. Turned out we only had to wait for fifteen minutes so not too shabby!! It pays to be patient :)
Metropolis is very cute and cozy, and we were seated in a back booth away from the door crowd which was nice. However, the window seats looked so cute and would definitely be the spot to sit and people watch. The bar had these amazing star lights hanging over it, and I loved them so much I might try to find some for my house...summer porch lights?
Metropolis says it is Mediterranean style cuisine on their website, but brunch felt more Parisian, as did the decor. The menu has a lot to choose from and also knows how to melt our hearts Sundaylicious style...
"First Things First"...that's right!!! The bar only has Mimosas for brunch libations, which is fine by me, but Tommy was a little disappointed that he could not get a Bloody Mary. The poor guy never joins us for brunch, and the one place we go doesn't have his favorite brunch drink of choice...we owe him one!! I ordered a Mimosa, and Laura got the Mimosa Madras which is a Mimosa with cranberry juice and grapefruit juice...YUM!!! They were very refreshing!! Even Shelia, our pregnant family brunch guest, got to feel special with her cranberry juice in a fancy glass.
If you think those drinks look amazing wait until you see the food!!! After last week's french toast extravaganza, I was feeling eggs this week...a little sweet treat one week, a little savory dish the next. When I saw scrambled eggs with chives and boursin cheese on the menu I got super excited. As you all know I love boursin cheese (please refer to "Sundaylicious Superbowl style" for my famous boursin cheese quote). Adding boursin to eggs sounded so scrumptious, and I am sad to say that I haven't seen this on a menu before because it is genius!! It adds a layer of flavor to the eggs that makes them even more delicious without being too heavy. It is not a gooey cheese so they aren't runny or wet because of it, and the chives with the boursin add a deeper onion and garlic taste to the dish. It came with toast, and potatoes which were spicy and yummy. Tim got the Metropolis breakfast which was two eggs, homefries, and toast. He added bacon...I can't blame him it smelled great!
Laura and I split the granola and fresh fruit bowl and we added yogurt. I am very pleased to announce that Metropolis uses vanilla yogurt....FINALLY someone got my memo!!!!! The fruit was refreshing, and the granola was crunchy because they toast it. Overall one of the best fruit and yogurt bowls we have had!
Laura got the smoked salmon eggs benedict and she really enjoyed it. The eggs were nice and runny, and the hollandaise sauce looked super rich.
Sheila chose the Cinnamon Brioche French toast. After I raved about mine from last week I don't think she had a choice in the matter. The bread is the same, so I knew she would love it. This dish came in as the close runner up for the dish of the day. If I didn't have French Toast last week I would have been all up on this choice!!! Super YUM!!
Tommy gets the prize, winning dish of the day, which was the Huevos Rancheros. It was two eggs, and it came with a spicy black bean hash, salsa, cheddar cheese, and sour cream. He loved it! His one call out was that it could have been a bit bigger, although it was filling. I also thought it should have come with some of those delicious spicy potatoes...so I shared mine with him:)
All the food was delicious, and the place was very cozy. Over all we scored Metropolis an 8 out of 10 eggs for food, and a 7 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere. The portions on some of the dishes could have been larger, and Tommy knocked off an egg for not having Bloody Mary's. The restaurant itself was a little too small. It would have scored an 8 because it really is cute inside, however, with the cramped waiting area and the cramped uncomfortable seats it lost an egg. Metropolis does have a very nice staff, a quaint and cozy atmosphere, good coffee, yummy mimosas, and great food, so it is totally worth checking them out for your next brunch spot.
On the back of their menu is a cute saying that I thought I would share with you:
"Live and love each day to the fullest--and don't forget to have breakfast,"
We should all try and live by that motto...especially on Sundays!!! After our great family brunch, Tim and Shelia drove home and Tommy and I took a much needed nap. Daylight savings time, and a delicious filling brunch, can really make a person tired.
