Bonjour from Boston!! Laura and I had a French themed Sundaylicious day today. We got inspired by last weeks Oscar best picture winner The Artist, which we had not seen yet. So with that movie on our agenda today, I thought it would be the perfect time to try Gaslight, a French Brasserie in the South End, www.gaslight560.com. We were so excited....we've never done a theme day before:) So I put on a cute and cozy Anthropologie sweater with a Parisian city sketched on it, and hopped into Laura's car for our fun filled French adventure. Look, we were venturing across the river, this was a big deal!!! We had no problem finding Gaslight thanks to Lee (Laura's Australian GPS voice), and there was a parking lot right next to it that does not charge for parking...AMAZING!!! We arrived at 11:30am, and this makes three weeks in a row that I have gotten Laura up before noon!!!
As you enter Gaslight from a side entrance, you go down a long hallway almost as if you are going to a speakeasy that is hidden away. Then you pop out into the restaurant and it's as if you have time warped to a Parisian Bistro in the 1920's. It is beautiful!!
Gaslight is covered in white tile, dark wood, and has accents of marble. The bar area is fantastic, and the dining room is cozy and while it is not very big, we never felt crowded when we sat there. We got seated at a table in the very middle of the room and it was a prime location to watch the Parisian inspired world around us. The booths at the windows with the cute lamps are our coveted choice to dine at..... next time :)
Everything on the menu sounded amazing, so it was hard to choose today. We started off with some of their delicious breads. We chose a chocolate croissant and a blueberry muffin to share. They were delicious! This might sound shocking but the blueberry muffin was even better than the croissant....I know crazy right?!!! It was almost like a little piece of cake and it was so good.
We paired these breads with a cup of coffee which was simply divine!! It was rich and dark just the way we like it. We could have stopped the meal right there and left happy :) We of course had to have a mimosa and a bellini...you know which one I had right? We toasted to our French themed day and allowed ourselves to feel truly relaxed after a very busy work week for both of us.
For my main course, I had to go with the Vanilla French Toast stuffed with a sweet white cheese (fromage blanc) and maple syrup. I seriously can't even begin to describe how good this dish was!!! Every bite melted in my mouth, and I was full after only a couple of bites but kept going because it was that good...I couldn't stop!!! The bread was a homemade brioche, and it was thick and buttery. This was the best thing I have had at a restaurant in a while!
Laura got the Croque-Madame, which is a sandwich made with grilled ham, gruyere cheese, a bechamel sauce, with a fried egg on top....YUM!! I had one bite and I was in love!!! It was soooooooo savory, and the bechamel sauce is delicious and adds to all the other flavors contributing to the dish. It was made with the same brioche bread as my french toast which added a slightly sweet flavor to the salty meat. It came with frites (french fries), but Laura was so full she could barely touch them (I had one and guess what? It was yummy!) We could not decide which dish was the dish of the day because they both were so exquisite. So they both won! However the real star of the day was the brioche bread!!
This meal was by far the best yet and it is about to set a record for us.....drumroll please.....our first perfect score!!! We give Gaslight a 10 out of 10 eggs for food, and a 10 out of 10 eggs for atmosphere!!! This is exactly how you want your Sunday brunch to be. We received great service, amazing food, no wait to get in, no wait to get your food, and a lovely environment that inspires you to relax and indulge! Believe me we did!! We will definitely be going back soon to have dinner there. I need to see this place lit up by night!! I can only imagine how it must glow!!
After brunch we drove to the Kendall Sq. Cinema to see The Artist, and we loved it! I can see why it won best picture, because it charms you and steals your heart (the dog especially!!). This was an amazing Sundaylicious day, and Laura and I are still stuffed from the decadent food. Next week's choice has big shoes to fill, and I can't wait!!
